About The Course

Understanding Music Theory is a complete introduction to all the key topics of music theory - taught in a practical way.

This course includes important lessons taking your from the very beginning of music theory, to the point where you can really understand it - in just 7 Lessons.

This course will give you all the basics that you need. If you didn’t want to go any further, you really don't need to, you should be able to use all of this for a long time and you will never run out of music to play. But if you wanted to continue your studies, and really grow your knowledge, this is the perfect starting point.

1 - Introduction to Music & Score - The score, notes and clefs

2 - The Notes - Letter names and time values of the notes

3 - Time Signatures - All types of time signatures, and how to tell the difference

4 - Sharps, Flats and Naturals

5 - Key Signatures - All the keys, and how they work together

6 - Scales - Major scales and the 3 Minor scales, and how to use them

7 - Chords - Minor & Major triads, extensions and inversions

What makes this course right for you?

Do you want to understand music better? Our lessons are a designed for all types of learners, the material is explained in an easy to follow manner, with as much context and examples as we could fit in. The technical theory is shown with animated graphics and musical examples to really help it make sense.

Music theory doesn’t have to be dry and boring. It just has to be taught properly. We teach in a really practical way, and try to show why it works the way it does, and every lesson is focused on how you can use it in your own musical craft.

But do you need theory?

Making music is about trying stuff out and exploring your own ideas. You kind of know what works for you and what just doesn’t feel right. But what if there was a way in which you knew what would work before you even start? You would always have a way through creative blocks, you could compose much faster, your creative output would be so much more satisfying, with less of the headaches. You would spend less time figuring our what to play, and more time exploring what how you want to play.

Sure, we all know musicians who are incredible, but don't know a thing about music theory. But studying music theory will help you become incredible, faster. It will help you to remove the things which hold your music back and get you through the blocks. 

​Theory will actually help you to 'feel it'. You will understand how music works, so you will be free to just let it work. If you know how to write or play great music, it will just be down to you to decide what to play.

About Us

Why We Exist​

​I have found a lot of music theory lessons are taught in a very dry and boring way, more like a history or maths class. This isn't necessarily bad, and the teachers sure know their stuff, but it doesn't connect with a lot of musicians. And many of the musicians I know actually have a fear of music theory. They think it is something they just can't understand. And these are great musicians so why is this? 

Musicians are creative people, and the truth is music theory is just not often taught in a creative way. It doesn't engage them. So I wanted to change this. I find music theory incredibly fun, and something that can be used creatively, to get the best out of our music. So I created Music Theory Centre to bring music theory to musicians. To make it creative, fun, and most importantly - practical. Theory isn't there for the sake of it, it can actually help us create the best music we can.

And so, our lessons are taught in an engaging and modern way to help you focus and actually learn what you need to know. All topics are shown with musical examples and animated graphics so you can see exactly what is going on. This will help you learn the music, and is something all types of learners can engage with.

Our courses are beginner friendly, everything is explained for you. Although we add a lot of context and extra details (for those who love this information), we always let you know what the important parts of the lessons are - with clear recaps and downloadable graphics to help it sink in.

Our videos are short,, engaging and easy to follow, to help you stay focused and learn quickly - and have fun doing it. We use a heavily visual style, with all examples animated on screen so you can follow along.

This doesn't mean it is easy, music theory is challenging and that's why it is so rewarding - but we can tell you it will be possible for you - and you can take the time you need.

How theory makes your (music) life easier

Theory is the tool which will allow you to write the music you want to. To be able to get the sound you imagined, where all the instruments work together and tell a compelling story. The harmonies sound beautiful and the chords move freely from one idea to another as you find your own unique style and sound...

​But it’s theory, it has to be boring, right?

Not if you actually use what you learn. That’s where our course comes into play. Our courses are written to be used by musicians to actually create music. We’ll show you how you can use theory to improve your music in each lesson, as a writer or performer. There may seem like a lot of rules, but once you understand them you will be able to break them well. We don't just teach you how theory works, but we show you why it works the way it does, so you can understand it and feel confident to use it however you want to.
